You can leave more than your hat on

Patrons called security after a man walked out of a restroom wearing only a hat and shoes.

He allegedly approached officers, made an obscene gesture and tried to bolt before being tackled. The man turned out to be one Thomas Jeffrey Lawson Jr. and was initially booked for indecent exposure at the property.

But the farcical image of a half-dressed gambler didn’t stay funny for long. McDowell County deputies later found the body of Thomas Lawson Sr.

Father found Dead

Authorities say he’d been shot multiple times. Investigators who reviewed text messages say the elder Lawson had arranged to meet his son to clear trees — and never returned.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the discovery and turned the matter into a homicide investigation.

Officers picked up Lawson Jr. and provided security at the Nitro property. They later arraigned him in Kanawaha County Magistrate Court on a first-degree murder charge tied to the McDowell County case.

Arrested – and hopefully dressed

He’s being held at the South Central Regional Jail without bond as the two counties coordinate.

Local police reports and criminal complaints say investigators found a chainsaw at the scene and that the victim had an unfired revolver in his pocket.

Those details are part of an active and ongoing probe.

Officials from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and the Nitro Police Department have described the case as under active investigation and declined to release additional details while family notifications and forensic work continue.

Reporters who first filed the casino-arrest side of the story include teams at WJLA-TV and WVVA; gambling-focused outlets also picked up the surreal connection between a casino nudity arrest and a homicide probe.

Bet Bizarre note: casinos see their fair share of odd behaviour — from jackpot tantrums to escalator wipeouts — but it’s not every day a late-night indecent-exposure turns into a murder investigation spanning two counties.

We’ll keep an eye on court filings for updates, but for now the scene reads like a cautionary tale: if you’re going to make a spectacle at a casino, make sure it’s not because you’re trying to run away from a much darker problem.
