Are your Influencers Human or AI? – Do you care?

What’s more important? Authenticity or infotainment? If an AI influencer is “better” at what they do than a human, which would be your favorite?

This question will soon be on literally every internet user’s mind. If what you see online isn’t “real”, i.e. produced by human creators, does it matter? Or is it content over creator?

What is the definition of human life?

There is a famous sequence in an episode of Star Trek – The Next Generation. In a sort of court hearing, it must be determined whether Lieutenant Commander Data is just a machine or if he is more than that. And if so, what? A form of life? A new form, even?

In case you don’t know, Commander Data is an android. In the episode “Measure of Man”, three criteria for sentience are defined – intelligence, self-awareness, and consciousness. Any being meeting all three criteria shall be defined as a life form.

When it becomes clear that Data fulfills at least the first two criteria, the question is: what is Data if he fulfills the third one as well? In the episode, they stop the trial there before an answer is found.

It’s almost like finding a definite answer might be dangerous. At the height of the discussion, Star Trek Captain Jean-Luc Picard exclaims:

You see he’s met two of your three criteria for sentience, so what if he meets the third, consciousness, in even the smallest degree? What is he then? I don’t know, do you? (to Riker) Do you? (to Phillipa) Do you?

Fascinatingly, the question remains open and becomes a recurrent topic in TNG.

But in real life, how much is the human factor really worth? How much can AI blur the line of authenticity? Cause AI’s coming, and it’s coming big time.

AI Tools will Massively Change Content Creation

Rashi Agarwal, founder of India’s first AI Marketing & Communications company Megalodon, says:

“Within the next 6 to 12 months, we could see a massive shift. Content creation using AI tools is growing at an exponential rate, and innovation in AI is leapfrogging rapidly. Social media platforms and influencer marketing will be transformed like never before.”

In other words, your next favorite casino streamer, fitness influencer or home cook might be artificially generated, and it will be up to you to find out if they are. That is, if you really care.

Success in Social Media usually needs a lot of background work offstage – strategic planning, marketing, analysis of engagement patterns, and so on.

Surely, AI can do this at least as good as man, so the rise of AI influencers seems inevitable. In online casinos, AI is already taking over important tasks. But is this a bad thing? While your first response might be “yes”, it has yet to stand the test of time.

What do you care about?

When you watch your favorite creators on e.g. YouTube, is it more important to you what they do or that it’s them who do it?

The question is almost more of a philosophical one – just as it appeared to be in Star Trek – and every user will have to answer it themselves.

By the way, don’t brush this topic aside as if it was ridiculous to think that AI influencers could replace human creation here. Just look at the case of Sewell Setzer.

At 14 years old, he fell in love with a chatbot imitating Game of Thornes character Danaerys Targaryen. A short time later, he committed suicide so they could be together in a different world.

Yeah, but that was just a teenager, from Florida no less, who didn’t know yet what he was doing, you say?

Already in 2023, a man in Belgium ended his life at the behest of a chatbot as a sacrifice to save the planet. He was in his thirties and a father of two small children.

Apparently, AI has already much more of an influence on humans than you might think.

So, if you think you’d never fall for AI personalities, make sure not to become too emotional, because the algorithm analyzing the success of artificially generated influencers won’t be either.
