In March 2026, an odor-producing device reportedly activated during an Avianca flight from Bogotá to Madrid, filling part of the cabin with a smell that passengers probably won’t be reviewing positively on TripAdvisor anytime soon.

Because nothing says “comfortable transatlantic journey” quite like wondering whether the strange smell around you is a harmless prank or the beginning of an emergency landing.

Avianca Wasn’t Laughing

While social media debated whether the incident was hilarious or horrifying, Avianca took a notably less relaxed approach.

The airline announced legal action and terminated Cossio’s return travel arrangements, arguing that the incident disrupted onboard order, passenger comfort, and operational safety.

Airlines, as it turns out, are surprisingly conservative when it comes to introducing mystery chemicals into a sealed metal tube travelling hundreds of miles per hour over the Atlantic Ocean.

Who knew?

The “It Was an Accident” Defence

Yeferson Cossio
Yeferson Cossio seems to have a lot of spare time.

Cossio later stated that the device belonged to him but denied that it was an intentional prank.

According to his version of events, the item accidentally activated inside his luggage and was never meant to become the centrepiece of an international news story.

He also insisted there was no content production taking place, no planned stunt, and no attempt to create viral footage.

Which is unfortunate, because becoming the world’s most famous accidental stink bomb owner isn’t exactly a career milestone people usually put on LinkedIn.

Maybe the accident happened at Cossio’s conception.

The Problem With Mystery Smells on Planes

The issue wasn’t necessarily the smell itself.

The problem was that nobody onboard knew what was causing it.

Cabin crew are trained to take unusual odours seriously because they can indicate electrical faults, overheating equipment, hazardous materials, or other safety concerns.

When a strange smell suddenly appears at 35,000 feet, the official aviation response is generally not, “Relax everyone, it’s probably just influencer content.”

Cossio can Drop a Bomb and doesn’t Lose Followers?

Here’s where the story becomes even more bizarre.

After days of headlines, criticism, jokes, memes, and aviation experts weighing in, there appears to have been no dramatic collapse in Cossio’s TikTok audience.

Publicly available figures continued to place him at around 20 million followers following the controversy.

In other words, the smell spread faster than the damage to his social media numbers.

For many influencers, being involved in an international airline controversy might trigger a mass unfollowing event.

For Cossio, it largely became another chapter in an already chaotic online career.

The Bet Bizarre Verdict

If someone had offered odds on an influencer becoming the centre of an aviation incident involving a stink bomb, a transatlantic flight, legal action, and a social media audience that barely seemed to care, nobody would have taken the bet.

Yet here we are.

The lesson? Never underestimate the internet’s ability to ignore, gloss over, and move on.

And never pack anything in your luggage that could make an entire aircraft wonder whether it should be wearing a gas mask.
